I don't believe they were declined and they should have received notice from the State. If you will call the office on thursday and ask to speak with Michael Dunn we will be able to get an answer for you as to where they are in the process. Sorry about the confusion. 410-392-5815

My two daughters, Sarah and Mary, applied for scholarships this year and did not receive them as of this date. They both received scholarships last year. We would like to know why they were declined.
Thank you.

I am against most of what Obama stands for, but on this he is right. When we begin to disregard the basic principles of our constitution, we are handing the terrorists a major victory. We must understand that the vast majority of Muslims are good moral people. The extremists are the ones causing the damage and they are a disgrace to most Muslims. Christians have had their extremists as well.....think of the loonies who protest at soldiers funerals, the KKK, and other Christian Militant groups. It would be ashame to let these fringe groups define the Christian Identity. We should not let that happen to those of other religions either for it will, eventually, come full circle!!!

Last week my family went to the CCSPCA to look at the English Setters (there are at least 10 sheltered there). We just lost a wonderful, sweet, gentle English Setter and we wanted another. I was SHOCKED at the conditions the dogs live in. We're from Howard County, and our shelter is like a resort and spa compared to the CCSPCA. The English Setters we visited with were covered in their own filth. One was coughing continuously and appeared to be sick. The dog we adopted was totally dehydrated and emaciated. We brought him home hoping that we could nurse him to health and that he would appreciate the kindness and love of our family. But as it turns out, he has severe food aggression (no wander, looks like he was starved), and his aggression continues to escalate to the level that we have all received wounds from him and have considered turning him back into the CCSPCA. But today I came across your blog and I know I can not take him back there, even though I signed a contract saying I would have to. He is scheduled to begin aggression modification and obedience training classes next weekend. I can only hope it will work for him, because he is a good dog otherwise, gets along great with other dogs and cats, and typically loves people. That shelter is a horrible place and it is apparent the dogs are very neglected. As a cat lover, I don't even want to think about the condition the shelter's cats are in. I don't know what will happen with our dog if aggression modification doesn't work. We may have no choice but to humanely euthanize him. And that is very sad because all we wanted to do was to rescue a homeless dog.

Joe,

I'm sorry that you're so afraid of our government that you have become unnecessarily paranoid. We are the government and elected and appointed officials work for us. And I don't expect that you have read and studied the Constitution much either, nor read the letters written by the people who wrote it.

The First Amendment isn't dead yet, but the Republicans have been working hard to kill it. Same for the other amendments. Since when is it OK to discriminate against women and gay people? They have every right to be protected as do men and heterosexual couples. Rights and protections are not subject to the will of the majority, especially when religious reasons are [mis]used.

I'm also very sorry that you don't understand that discrimination is wrong under any circumstances no matter what gender, race, or sexual orientation people have when they're born. As for Alito and Scalia--give me a break. They decided that corporations are people. That's enough trouble to keep us in a big mess for a long time.

Back to guns and the corporate thugs of the NRA--shootings and deaths have gone up since the insane ruling against the cities of Chicago and DC. So the NRA defends the right to shoot and kill people when the local authorities are against it and pass laws to protect their citizens.

States rights, yeah, sure, except when it's inconvenient to the dogma and corporate propaganda. Hypocrites.

I'm gonna get lit up by the softies but I'll say it anyway: If you want to live in America, learn English. We should not have to cater to immigrants who can't be bothered to try and assimilate. Also, pay taxes. I have an honest job and each paycheck a nice hefty chuck disappears to the government (the same government that wants to give these people drivers licenses..wtf). Diversity is great, but if you want to live here and expect people to welcome you with open arms, contribute to our culture.. don't try and resist it

Bridget:

You write that: "When the Constitution was written, the weapons were muskets and rifles, not hand guns. Hand guns were relatively rare, especially as concealed weapons."

It's refreshing to here a liberal point of view that no longer espouses the "Living Constitution." I'm all for a theory of consitutional interpretation that freezes the application of all rights to those instruments available when the Consitution was ratified. We just need to apply it uniformly. Here's a (non-exhaustive) list of where we can start:

Don't say things the government doesn't like on the internet. The First Amendment obviously doesn't apply, given Mr. Gore had not yet invented the internet when the Bill of Rights was written.

Let's lynch Rush Limbaugh; he says things on television and radio that the government doesn't like. Of course, radio and television weren't around at the time of ratification. (While we're lynching, however; let's get Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews in there, because I don't like them).

Hope you don't like your car. Given the severe budget crisis we're in, I think the government should take it to fix the deficit. Cars didn't exist when the Constitution was ratified, so we don't need to worry about that pesky Takings Clause.

Your local police department will be over for a visit tonight search the hard drive on your computer. They won't have a warrant nor even any probably cause to believe you've done anythign wrong, but that doesn't matter; computers weren't invented when the Constitution was ratified.

Of course, we can forget about abortions; I don't recall any Planned Parenthood Clinics in the writings of 1791.

Gay marriage; well I guess that's out unless you can find some evidence of them occuring at the time of ratification.

The problem with your analysis is that it is result oriented. We can't selectively apply consitutional protections to those rights we like and deny them to those we don't. You should read Alito's plurality and Scalia's concurrence in McDonald, ignoring the result. Then read the dissents in the same manner. Ask yourself which reasoning would be correct if it were applied to a right you cherish. If you are honest with yourself, I think you can only come down with Alito and Scalia.
